On October 22, 2009, California State University at Sacramento student, Scott Hawkins was rushed to UC David Medical Center after his roommate had attacked him with a bat and knife.

As reported by the Sacramento Bee, for five desperate minutes, emergency room doctors at UC Davis frantically tried to revive Scott, but after five minutes the doctors pronounced him dead.

Several days later, his family received the charges for those five minutes: $29,186.50.  Including $18,900.50 for “Trauma Rescue Service.”

Without a doubt we need to reform health care; but it also must be done in transparent and accountable way.  Unfortunately for Americans, backroom wheeling and dealing and partisanship has become commonplace in Washington and stifled the public debate on health care reform.

Rep. Jerry McNerney has been guilty of this.  He has played it coy, refused to let his constituents know whether he would support the Pelosi Health care bill, and failed to answer questions on this critical topic.  But early Sunday morning, he finally made it official.  McNerney voted for a government run health care bill that cut billions of dollars from Medicare and increases new taxes on our struggling middle-class families.  The bill will amount to substantial cost increases for small businesses that been forced to lay off workers.

Since Obama took office, over 2.6 million Americans have lost their jobs.  According to recent reports, 1 out of 5 small businesses had to cut jobs in the third quarter of this year.  Forty-nine of fifty states have lost jobs since the Democrat stimulus passed in February.  With all this mounting debt, McNerney has now voted to add another $1.2 trillion in additional debt on a health care plan he probably didn’t read.

The 2032 page Pelosi heath care bill destroys jobs, increases taxes, creates 118 new government commissions, boards, and bureaucracies, and cuts Medicare benefits.

The most aggravating aspect of this process is the arrogance of power displayed by the Democrat leadership.  They rushed to vote on a bill no one could have read and they voted against giving members of congress 72-hours to read the bill after all the amendments and changes had been made.

On an issue of this magnitude and importance, Americans deserve a full debate and open process.  Nancy Pelosi, Jerry McNerney, and congressional Democrats have failed to provide a transparent and honest debate.
